PART TWO: INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: Not all the requirements specified
in this part of the document may apply to you.
Be sure to check with your faculty supervisor.

Please read the following instructions carefully.

1. The paper you hand in must be an original paper written specifically and only for this course. You are not allowed to hand in a paper that you wrote for another course. If you are caught handing in a paper that you originally wrote for some other course, you will get an automatic F grade for the entire course. Other punitive measures may also be sought.

2. In addition to the requirements and suggestions mentioned above, your term paper must be TYPED and in the following modified APA style:

Length: See your independent study approval form.

Due date: As agreed with your faculty supervisor.

Paper Size: 8.5 x 11 inches.

Paper color: white or natural (in the case of recycled paper).

Binding: The only acceptable binding for your paper is a staple in the top left hand corner.

Margins: No more and no less than one inch all around. (This is the standard or default margins on almost all computer word-processing programs.)

Typeface/Font: Courier or New Courier 10 CPI, or 12pt. No other typeface and font will be acceptable.

Spacing: Double for the text and single for quotations and footnotes. Spacing between paragraphs must be the same as for the lines within the paragraphs.

Quotations: Not required, but if you do have them then they should be indented seven spaces from the left margin, and they should be separated from the text by a line space. NOTE: Your paper should have no more than two direct quotations that are twenty words or more in length. Moreover, no direct quotation can exceed 100 words in length.

Citations: Reference citations should appear in the text itself in this form: open parentheses, author's last name, comma, year of publication, colon, page number, close parentheses. For example, if I had referred to the book by Strunk and White, mentioned above, in the text then the citation would have appeared as follows: (Strunk and White, 1979:16). Reference citations in footnotes should also be in the same form.

Page numbering: Page numbering must be continuous and page numbers must appear centered at the bottom of the page.

Cover page: Your paper must have a cover page with the following information on it: title of your paper, your name as it appears in the school records, course number and title, name of the college, semester, year, and my name as it appears above. All information must be centered on the page and in the same typeface and font as the text of the paper.

Plagiarism: This is an offense and it is punishable by death (which in this instance will mean an F grade for the entire course). Plagiarism refers to the use of ideas and/or words of someone else without giving credit in order to pass them off as your own. In other words, for every main idea, fact, etc., and for every direct quotation there must be appropriate references provided.

Headings: Appropriate headings must be provided in your paper including these two: 'introduction' and 'conclusion.'

References: For each reference provide a photocopy of the title page (if the source is an article), OR of the title page together with the contents pages (if the source is a book). Failure to provide this material will automatically incur an F grade for the paper.
Please note that, as a general rule, the more references you have (as long as they are relevant and appropriate) in your paper, the better. All references must be grouped alphabetically under the heading 'references' at the end of your paper. The format to be used for references is shown in the following examples:

Format example for a single author work (book):

Lulat, Y. G-M. U. S. Relations with South Africa: An Annotated Bibliography: Volume One: Books, Documents, Reports, and Monographs. Boulder, CO: Westview, 1991.

Format example for a multiple author work (book):

Altbach, Philip G.; Kelly, David G.; and Lulat, Y. G-M. Research on Foreign Students and International Study: An Overview and Bibliography. New York: Praeger, 1985.

Format example for a chapter in a collected (or edited) work:

Lulat, Y. G-M., and Altbach, Philip G. "International Students in Comparative Perspective: Toward a Political Economy of International Study," in Higher Education: A Handbook of Theory and Research, Vol. 1, ed. by John C. Smart, pp. 439-94. New York: Agathon, 1985.

Format example for a journal article:

Lulat, Y. G-M. "Education and National Development: The Continuing Problem of Misdiagnosis and Irrelevant Prescriptions." International Journal of Educational Development 8, No. 4 (1988): 315-28.

Note: Bibliographies and references are always typed with a hanging indentation--that is all lines after the first line are indented seven spaces.

Term Paper Exam: The term paper must be written entirely by you. You are not permitted to get someone else to write it for you. To determine if you wrote the term paper yourself you may be called upon to undergo an oral and/or written exam on your term paper. In such an exam, questions will be asked on any thing about the term paper that can help establish its authorship. Should you fail this exam, you will be given an automatic F grade for the ENTIRE course.

Grading: Your paper will be graded on the basis of the following points distribution:

30 points for Structure (see discussion above to find out what structure is).

15 points for Spelling.

15 points for Grammar.

30 points for Organization (this refers to matters such as use of headings, types of paragraphs, sequencing of paragraphs, etc.).

150 points for Content quality (this refers to the quality of the actual information you present in your paper).

15 points for Style (see above).

30 points for References (this refers not only to the quality of the reference material you found, but also how well the references are used in the text of your paper).

15 points for Overall quality of the paper(this refers to how well the paper is presented as a scholarly work in general from the perspective of both format and content).

Total number of points = 300

SUGGESTION ON BEGINNING WORK ON YOUR PAPER

You should start work on your paper immediately by first compiling a bibliography for your topic. Use the key words search method to identify material.
