| Timothy
J. Rutenber was the associate vice provost for international
education at the University at Buffalo (UB) from 1991-2004. From the time he joined the university, Rutenber distinguished himself as a model of professional service whose pursuit of excellence in international education administration set an outstanding example for his colleagues at UB and the State University of New York, as well as those with whom he worked at institutions of higher education around the world. As a recent college graduate, Rutenber joined the Peace Corps and served in Upper Volta (Burkina Faso). He returned to the United States and served as a recruiter for the Peace Corps before going back to West Africa in 1978 as part of an agricultural research project. His work with Niger continued when he accepted appointment as administrator of a U.S. Agency for International Development project involving the nomadic peoples of Niger. In recognition of Rutenber's outstanding service to the field of international education, as well as his own personal commitment to international exchange with African countries, the Office of International Education established the Timothy J. Rutenber Memorial Scholarship in 2004. The scholarship will be awarded annually to one University at Buffalo student participating in an overseas academic program in Africa. Donations are being accepted for the Timothy J. Rutenber Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks payable to University at Buffalo Foundation may be sent to Dr. Sandra J.
